Deck 25 FAQs
21 . Does the sub-frame require an airflow?

Yes.

The sub-frame in most deck construction projects will be pressure treated softwood timber.  In order to maximise life span it is important to create ventilation gaps or portholes.  Airflow prevents fungus and mould build up.  The principal is similar to the roofs of most houses. (Ventilation and airflow will ensure that structural members: purlins, rafters and joists could last up to 100 years.  Stagnant air, heat and humidity are the enemies of structural timber.)
